Visitors to Cedar Key and the Gulf Coast of Florida know that one of the highlights of a trip to this region are the spectacular manatees that inhabit the inland waterways, especially during the winter months. For those unable to make the trip, however, Blue Springs State Park in Orange City, Fla., with support from the Save the Manatee Club, has just launched a new manatee webcam. According to the club’s e-newsletter, “support for the webcams was made possible by a donation to Save the Manatee Club as a memorial gift in honor of the late Mrs. Norma Norton, a Florida resident who cared deeply for manatees.”

Dolphins are a common sight while kayaking just offshore from Pelican Point.

Spring is just a week away! It’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation. Kayaking in the peaceful waters near Pelican Point is a fantastic way to enjoy the natural beauty of Cedar Key. And you might even see some dolphins, as we did on a recent trip. They certainly seem to enjoy chasing kayakers — but don’t worry, they’re quite friendly.
